The southernmost point of Plaquemines Parish experienced an unplanned population boom due to response to the oil leak disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The Sheriff watched the population of Venice, Louisiana double. Along with the increase in people came a rise in crime and arrests. The trip from Venice to the lockup in Belle Chasse is 68 miles, with round trip transport tying up deputies as much as four hours per suspect. The Sheriff's Office needed a solution. DRC Logistics Jails on Demand found the answer: a custom detention unit to hold as many as ten suspects prior to booking. Jails on Demand set up the unit in Venice June 7, 2010, and in its first month of operation, the portable jail housed nearly 75 suspects.
